  • Position Scope:

    The Njernda Koori Kids Engagement Worker position aims to promote healthy lifestyles (in particular, participation in organised sports or other physical activities) and support young people (aged 8 -18) to stay at school, transition to training or further education, and be diverted from the juvenile justice system.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide client centred care to each young person registered in the Youth Program, through:
    • assessing each young person’s needs when they join the program developing a goal driven care plan for each young person on the program o regularly monitoring the progress of each young person’s goals
    • providing one-on-one support and mentoring to each individual young person using a case management approach based on each individual young person
    • making referrals to other supports and services, as required
    • linking young people into relevant programs, such as the L2P and the Bullroarer program
    • making recommendations for use of the Youth Program’s Brokerage Funding to support young people to participate in organised sport activities, as required.
  • Coordinate group-based activities for young people focusing on healthy lifestyles.
  • Track the impact of the program on the health and wellbeing of each young person.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with the local secondary schools, sporting clubs (including the Warma Sports Club), training and education providers (Warma Education), and employment services in order to support young people achieve their goals.
  • Maintain appropriate data and program and client records, and provide quarterly reports to the CEO.
  • Work as a team member, and work closely with the Community Engagement Worker, Health Promotion Team, the Justice Worker, the SEWB Team, Family Services Team, Health and Administrative staff and Warma Education
  • Support other team members in their work.
  • Work cooperatively to engage young people in local community events e.g. family days, NAIDOC week, men’s and women’s health days etc.
  • Attend and participate in team meetings, general staff meetings, etc.
  • Represent the organization and/or community in forums outside the agency
  • Participate in ongoing training and development.
  • Ensure the confidentiality of client information at all times.
  • In consultation with the CEO, monitor and evaluate program delivery.
  • Other duties as directed.
  • Act, at all times, in a professional manner in accordance with the policies and practices of the corporation.

 

Program Duties
  • Engage with at-risk young people within the community and support them to participate in local sporting activities, stay at school, and enrol in further education or employment services.
  • Establish a health and wellbeing program, that supports young people to participate in the local sporting club of their choice, on the condition that they remain at school or participate in further education.
  • Organise regular health and wellbeing activities (covering a range of topics such as healthy lifestyles, healthy relationships, respecting women) for the young people, in partnership with the Njernda Health Promotion Team and other experts, including the L2P program and the IGNITION program.
  • Mentor young people in Echuca and surrounding areas and support them to stay at school, participate in further training and education, and/or divert them from the youth justice system.
  • Build the confidence and self-esteem of the young people by encouraging and supporting them to participate in organised sport (Warma Sports Club teams or other local teams) and to remain in education and/or training.
  • Make recommendations to the CEO for the use of the Program’s Brokerage Funds, which can be used to pay the sporting club fees / subscriptions and uniforms for young people at risk of disengaging from school and further education.

 

Key selection criteria
  • A proven knowledge and understanding of aboriginal people and aboriginal culture.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of issues relating to the needs of at-risk aboriginal young people in the area.
  • Understanding and commitment to aboriginal community controlled services.
  • An ability to communicate effectively with aboriginal young people and advocate on their behalf manner.
  • Sound negotiation skills.
  • An ability to advocate on behalf of young people.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to maintain records and manage time effectively and efficiently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively as part of a team.
  • Computer skills.

 

Other relevant information
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo satisfactory pre-employment checks, including providing at least two professional referees, completion of a medical declaration, Police Records Check, Working With Children Check, Victorian Driver’s License, and proof of identify and qualifications
