For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over 50 who need a bit of extra help at home
Our CHSP program provides entry-level support for older Aboriginal people living at home who are not yet receiving an aged care package. We aim to help our Elders stay strong, independent and connected to community for as long as possible.
You may be eligible if:
- You are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person aged over 50
- A non-Aboriginal person aged over 65
- You do not have a current aged care or disability support package
- You need some help to manage day-to-day living at home
Support may include:
- Personal care (e.g. help with dressing or showering)
- Meals and shopping
- Help around the home (cleaning, gardening, small repairs)
- Equipment to help you stay mobile and safe
- Transport
- Respite and social activities
- Nursing, physiotherapy or allied health services
- Home modifications (rails, ramps, etc.)
Note: Njernda may not provide every service listed, but we will help you access what you need from other providers.
How to get started
Call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422
- You’ll be asked some questions and may need your Medicare card
- If eligible, they’ll arrange an In-Home Assessment
- You can have a trusted family member or friend with you during this process
- Together, you’ll develop a care plan that suits your needs and goals
There may be a small cost for some services or equipment, but currently Njernda does not charge fees for services.
