Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need to be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander to work at Njernda?

No — we are a proudly inclusive employer, and welcome applications from people from all backgrounds for roles on the Njernda team.

However, as an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation, some roles are identified positions. This means they are open only to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants, as permitted under section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic). If a position is an identified role, this will be clearly stated in the job advertisement.

We strongly encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to apply for all positions.

  • How do I know if a role is an Aboriginal-identified position?

If a role is Aboriginal-identified, the job advertisement and position description will clearly state this. For these roles, applicants must be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and will be required to provide confirmation of their Aboriginality.

  • I’ve never worked in Aboriginal services before. Can I still apply?

Yes. If you have the skills, qualifications, experience and values we’re looking for, we’d love to hear from you. For non-Indigenous applicants, we look for a demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, Aboriginal self-determination and the delivery of culturally safe services.

  • What kind of roles are available at Njernda?

We employ people across a wide range of areas - including health and ageing, family services, early childhood, youth programs, community services, administration, corporate services, finance, community engagement, and more.

  • Where can I find the vacancies available at Njernda?

All our vacant roles are advertised online, both on Njernda’s website as well as on Seek.

  • Do you support training and professional development?

Yes - we all benefit if our team continues to learn and grow and we are committed to supporting staff to develop in their careers. We provide on-the-job training, and support access to relevant external courses, and opportunities to attend conferences and cultural learning activities.

  • How do I apply for a role?

Each job advertisement will include a link to the position description, that has the key selection criteria and instructions on how to apply. Applications usually require a current resume and a brief cover letter addressing the key selection criteria. If you need help with your application, contact our HR team

  • Can I apply for more than one role at a time?

Yes — if you meet the requirements for more than one role advertised, you are welcome to apply for each one separately, addressing the position’s key selection criteria, resume and cover letter.

  • I have a disability - can I still apply?

Absolutely. Njernda Aboriginal Corporation is an equal opportunity employer, and we are committed to creating an inclusive and accessible workplace. Please let our HR team know if you need any adjustments to be made during the recruitment process.
