Our Story

Njernda Aboriginal Corporation began in 1974 as the Echuca Aboriginal Co-operative, created by community members who saw the need for local, culturally appropriate services led by Aboriginal people, for Aboriginal people. In 1990, the organisation adopted the name ‘Njernda’, a Wemba Wemba word meaning ‘to know our living culture’, reflecting our ongoing commitment to cultural identity, healing, and strength.

From modest beginnings, Njernda has grown to provide a wide range of programs in health, family support, youth and community services, aged care and more—always guided by the values of our Elders and the aspirations of our community.

We are proud of our deep roots in the Echuca region and the partnerships we have built across government, non-government and Aboriginal organisations. Our story is one of resilience, growth and cultural pride—and it continues to unfold through the strength and leadership of our Mob.
