Community Justice Worker

  • Position Scope:

    The Community Justice Program supports Aboriginal community members with court matters and with community based orders. The Community Justice Worker meets regularly with Victoria Police to ensure the development and implementation of initiatives that improves Justice Outcomes for Aboriginal people.

Role Purpose

  • Provide on the job management of Aboriginal offenders undertaking mandated community work orders referred to the service.
  • Assist, where appropriate and in conjunction with service providers, offenders to successfully complete mandated community work.
  • Facilitate outcomes for Aboriginal community members with outstanding fines to meet their obligations relevant to their fines.
  • Liaise with the Sheriff’s Office to ensure appropriate options are available for local aboriginal people to finalise outstanding fines
  • Support Aboriginal community members in their negotiations with the Sheriff’s Office and ensure they understand their options for the best possible outcomes.
  • Inform justice agencies and other service providers about social and historical factors that may be contributing to negative contacts between service providers and the client.
  • All reports, project plans and other relevant data to be submitted one week before the due date.
  • Meet regularly with Victoria Police and other Justice agencies to assist in the development and implementation of initiatives that improve justice outcomes for Aboriginal people.
  • Maintain accurate files and data as required by the Department of Justice and Njernda Aboriginal Corporation

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to the needs of community members, providing support to individuals and families as required including:
  • information and Referral to other services;
  • financial assistance;
  • advocacy;
  • Support other team members in their work.
  • Attend and participate in general staff meetings.
  • Represent the organization and/or community in forums outside the agency (e.g. at court, on panels, on committees etc.).
  • Participate in ongoing training and development.
  • Ensure the confidentiality of client information at all times.
  • Maintain appropriate data and program and client records.
  • In consultation with the programs and services manager, monitor and evaluate program delivery.
  • Partake in regular supervision and professional development as required and directed.
  • Act, at all times, in a professional manner in accordance with the policies and practices of the Corporation.
  • Other duties as directed.

Key Selection Criteria

Applicants must possess:

  • A proven knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal people and Aboriginal culture.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of issues relating to and needs of aboriginal families in the area.
  • A good understanding of issues effecting aboriginal community members in the Echuca district and knowledge of services available within the region.
  • Understanding and commitment to Aboriginal community controlled medical/family services.
  • An ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people and handle issues in a sensitive manner.
  • Sound negotiation skills.
  • An ability to advocate on behalf of individuals and families.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to maintain records and manage time effectively and efficiently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively as part of a multi-skilled team
  • Basic computer skills.
