Traineeships – Aboriginal Health Workers (x2)

  • Position Scope:

    Aboriginal Health Worker Traineeships allow Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people that have a keen interest in developing a Healthcare career to enrol and complete a Primary Healthcare course/certificate. Qualifying as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Worker, will enable you to develop both clinical skills and the ability to respond to the social and cultural needs of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients whilst working in a correctional environment.

Overview

Njernda Aboriginal Corporation is seeking to employ and support 2 x Aboriginal Health Worker Trainees. The opportunity allows Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people that have a keen interest in developing a Healthcare career to enrol and complete a Primary Healthcare course/certificate.

Qualifying as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Worker, will enable you to develop both clinical skills and the ability to respond to the social and cultural needs of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients whilst working in a correctional environment.

Njernda will provide and support a working opportunity at the allocated site upon acceptance of enrolment in an appropriate Primary Healthcare course and will offer ongoing support during your traineeship, paid working hours and paid time off to attend your course.

Trainees will function within a multidisciplinary team and are required to refer, communicate, and collaborate with other health professionals to advocate for the cultural and health needs of Aboriginal patients.

Primary Healthcare accredited courses:

  • -Certificate III Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care
  • -Certificate IV Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice
  • -Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency – Approved Programs of Study (ahpra.gov.au) Course time frame: 18 months – 2 years

Key Responsibilities

During your traineeship you will be under the supervision of an Aboriginal Health Worker or Practitioner. Overall supervision of the Traineeship Program will be provided by the Executive Director of Health and Ageing.

This qualification reflects the role of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people working to provide a range of clinical primary health care services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients.

Applicants must possess:

  • -Demonstrated understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal people and their health and ability to effectively engage, and communicate sensitively, with Aboriginal people to address their health needs.
  • -Ability and willingness to learn and grow within this role while being guided by other health professionals while only working within your scope of practice.
  • -Demonstrated IT skills adequate to the role.
  • -You must Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait islander to apply for this position. You must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. (N.B. An applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14 of the Equal Opportunities Act 1977, NSW).
  • -Commitment to engage in the Certificate IV in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice as supported by the traineeship.
  • -The ability to complete accurate record keeping in a timely and coordinated approach always maintaining privacy and confidentiality.
  • -The ability to work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team showing all parties respect.
  • -Be willing to undertake other roles within the unit as directed, particularly to support back fill.

Qualifications & Experience

  • -Applicants must be 18 years old or older.
  • -You must Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait islander to apply for this position. You must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.

 

 Other Relevant Information
  • -The successful applicant will be required to undergo satisfactory pre-employment checks, including providing at least two professional referees, completion of a medical declaration, Police Records Check, Working With Children Check, Victorian Driver’s License, and proof of identify and qualifications

  • -You will need to disclose any pre-existing illness or injury you know about which could be affected by the described work duties. Under section 82 (7) of the Accident Compensation Act, failure to disclose such a pre-existing illness or injury will mean that, if employed, you will not be paid compensation for that condition.
  • -Trainees must remain eligible in their enrolled course to continue employment at Njernda Aboriginal Corporation.
